GRANDDAUGHTER

After all these years of living, I still can't find the words to say,
How much joy you've brought, into all our lives each day.
How you just go on trying, to be as thoughtful as can be,
Even when times are very trying, and the way is hard to see.

Such a special little girl, bringing me your little skinned knee,
Crying, and saying, Nanny please kiss it, and make it well for me.
You know back then, when you were a little baby girl,
If you had commanded, I would have tried to remake the world.

And now that you're a grownup lady, and all out on your own,
If troubles came and you should call, I'd still say, come on home.
Whatever is wrong, we can mend it here, just like your little skinned knee,
We can do anything together, just as long as it's you and me.

But I don't think that will happen, because you're very strong,
Which isn't very surprising, haven't I known that all along?
So darling, I wish you a very happy birthday, and then, many more,
Even until we celebrate them all again, over on Heaven's shore.
